← The GEO guide

A citation, in GEO terms, is a generative engine naming or linking to a specific source when it answers a question — the footnote-style attribution you'll see in Perplexity's answers, or a named source in a ChatGPT response with browsing enabled. Being cited is the closest thing GEO has to "ranking #1": it's the model telling the person exactly where the information came from, with your name attached.

What the founding research actually found

The 2023 paper that coined GEO tested specific content-level interventions across roughly 10,000 real queries and measured their effect on citation and visibility rates in generated answers. The tactics that moved the needle most were concrete and specific: adding statistics, direct citations, and quotations from credible sources — content that reads as verifiable rather than merely well-written or well-optimised.

What that means for content you actually publish

  • Original data beats restated opinion. A model synthesising an answer needs a source to point to — original research, a proprietary dataset, or a genuinely new analysis gives it something to cite that no one else can claim. This is why our own ChatGPT Ads Tracker exists as a living, ongoing dataset rather than a one-off post.
  • Direct-answer structure gets lifted verbatim. Content phrased as a clean, specific answer to a specific question — rather than buried in a long narrative lead-up — is easier for a model to extract and attribute cleanly.
  • Named, dated, sourced claims read as more credible. A model weighing which of several similar sources to cite favours the one that's transparent about who wrote it and when, and that itself cites where its facts came from — see how we approached this in our own OpenAI-sourced ChatGPT Ads guide.
  • Being the primary source, not the summariser, wins. If you're the fifth blog to restate someone else's finding, the model has four other places it could cite instead. If you're the one who generated the finding, you're the only citable source for it.

Citations are earned off-site too

None of this is limited to your own domain. A model can cite a Reddit thread, a review site, or a trade publication's coverage of you just as easily as your own page — see why Reddit specifically matters and how earned press coverage functions as a GEO tactic.

Citations are one input into the broader picture — see how AI visibility actually gets measured once citations, sentiment and share of voice are all in play.
