AI visibility is the measurable outcome GEO work is actually trying to move: whether your brand appears at all when someone asks an AI model a question relevant to your category, how often, how favourably, and relative to which competitors. If GEO is the practice, AI visibility is the scoreboard.
What actually gets measured
- Presence. The most basic question: does your brand show up at all when a model is asked the kinds of questions your buyers actually ask?
- Share of voice. When you do show up, how does that compare to your direct competitors across the same set of questions?
- Sentiment. Being mentioned isn't automatically good — a model can name you while describing you unfavourably or inaccurately.
- Source attribution. Which sites and pages is the model actually drawing on when it talks about you? This tells you where your reputation is currently being built, which is often not your own website at all.
- Consistency across models. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude don't necessarily agree — a brand can be well-represented in one and invisible in another.
Why this needs ongoing tracking, not a one-off audit
Generative engines update their retrieval sources continuously, and models themselves get updated on their own release cycles — a snapshot taken once tells you almost nothing about the trend. The same buyer-intent prompts need to be tracked repeatedly over time to see whether visibility is actually improving, which is the same logic behind why we run our own ChatGPT Ads Tracker as a living page rather than a single report.
Why this is a brand problem before it's a technical one
Since a meaningful share of what a model says about a brand is drawn from outside that brand's own website — reviews, forums, third-party coverage — improving AI visibility usually isn't a matter of fixing your site's schema or metadata. It's a matter of shaping the broader narrative that exists about you across the internet, which is a brand and reputation exercise as much as a technical one.
This is exactly what our own AI Visibility product is built to track — prompt-level monitoring across models, competitor benchmarking, and source attribution, on an ongoing basis rather than as a one-time report.
