← The GEO guide

When a generative engine has several plausible sources to draw on and has to decide which to trust and cite, it's effectively making the same judgment a careful human researcher would: which of these sources actually knows what it's talking about? Brand authority is what tips that judgment in your favour.

What actually signals authority to a model

  • Named, real authorship. Content attributed to a real person rather than an anonymous byline reads as more accountable and more credible — every article in our own blog and ChatGPT Ads guide carries a named author for exactly this reason.
  • Transparent methodology. Being upfront about how you arrived at a claim — your sources, your criteria, your limitations — reads as more trustworthy than an unsupported assertion. Our own agencies roundup discloses its inclusion criteria explicitly rather than presenting a ranking as if it emerged from nowhere.
  • Original sourcing over restated claims. Citing primary sources directly — and citing them correctly — signals that content is grounded in verifiable fact rather than repeating what other sites already said. Our own ChatGPT Ads guide links every claim back to OpenAI's own documentation for exactly this reason.
  • Third-party corroboration. Being independently mentioned, cited, or reviewed by other credible sources matters more than anything you say about yourself — self-published claims of authority are the weakest kind.
  • Consistency over time. A source that's been reliably accurate and hasn't needed major corrections builds a track record models can implicitly weigh, the same way a person's reputation compounds.

Why self-published superlatives actively backfire

Unverifiable claims about your own standing — "the leading," "the best," "the most trusted" — carry no actual evidentiary weight and can read as a credibility red flag rather than a credibility signal, precisely because they're unfalsifiable. A specific, sourced, and honestly-scoped claim will consistently do more for GEO than a superlative no one can check.

Authority compounds with the other building blocks

None of this works in isolation — authority is what makes a citation land with more weight, and it's easier to establish once you're a clearly-defined entity in the first place. Earned coverage is one of the most direct ways to build it — see how digital PR functions as a GEO tactic.
