← The GEO guide

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — the practice of improving how generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude retrieve, summarise, and present your brand in the answers they generate. Unlike traditional search, a generative engine doesn't hand someone a list of links to click through; it synthesises an answer directly, and GEO is about shaping whether — and how favourably — you show up inside that synthesis.

Where the term actually comes from

GEO wasn't coined by an agency trying to sell a new service. The term was formally introduced in a paper titled "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," first posted to arXiv in November 2023 by researchers Pranjal Aggarwal, Vishvak Murahari, Tanmay Rajpurohit, Ashwin Kalyan, Karthik Narasimhan and Ameet Deshpande, working across Princeton University, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI, and IIT Delhi. It was later presented at the ACM SIGKDD conference in August 2024.

The paper's contribution was concrete, not just a definition: it built a measurement framework and benchmark (GEO-bench), tested specific content interventions across roughly 10,000 queries, and found that tactics like adding statistics, citations and direct quotations could meaningfully improve how often content was surfaced in generated responses. That's a genuinely different starting point from most marketing terminology — an academic paper with a testable methodology, not a framework invented to be sold.

Related terms — and why they're not fully settled yet

You'll also see AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), AIO (AI Optimization), LLMO (LLM Optimization), and plain "AI SEO" used to describe overlapping or near-identical practices. As of early 2026, no single consensus definition distinguishing these terms had settled in the academic literature, and in practitioner and trade contexts they're frequently used interchangeably. We use GEO on this site because it's the term with the clearest academic origin — but if you hear someone say AEO or AI SEO, they very likely mean the same underlying practice.

One disambiguation worth making explicit

"GEO" has an older, unrelated meaning in advertising and local search — geographic or location-based targeting (serving different content or bids by region). That's not what this page, or this site, means by GEO. Everywhere on surgelify.com, GEO means Generative Engine Optimization.

What this actually looks like in practice

In practice, GEO means treating your brand's presence across the entire information ecosystem — not just your own website — as the thing being optimised: how you're discussed on review sites, forums, industry publications, and community platforms, because that's the material a generative engine actually draws on when it decides what to say about you. See how GEO actually works for the mechanics behind that, or how this differs from traditional SEO if you're coming at this from a search background.
